About Our Courses

The Institute for Arts Entrepreneurship™ (IAE) is proud to offer our innovative Design Your Life online certificate program to our members. Our curriculum model will be featured in The Design Journal in September of 2014. Our courses are accredited through the University of California-San Diego Extension.  #1 My Value 101

Number of Units: 3
Total Hours of Instruction: 45 hours  (Certificate level program 21 hours)

Course Description: Students will expand their knowledge of self through: rediscovering their guiding core values, skills and interests around family, work, entrepreneurship, creativity, collaboration, lifestyle, the matching of their words to actions, and being of service to others. Students will conduct informational interviews with their closest friends and family members to deepen their insights.  They will participate in interactive activities to illuminate to themselves, and share with others in class, who they are and what they value. Basic principals of human intelligence building will be introduced which include ones capacity to reason, plan, contextualize, synthesize, problem-solve, think, comprehend ideas, use language and learn. This course is a prerequisite and must be completed before enrolling in any other IAE course.

#2 Life 101: Creating Value Through Everyday Living

Number of Units: 3
Total Hours of Instruction: 45 hours  (Certificate 21 hours)

Course Description: In this course, students will learn how to leverage their time and resources to increase personal and professional value through evaluating the investment they make into daily activities and available resources. Strengthening their critical & strategic thinking and problem solving skills, students will learn how to identify where their actions and words do not match. Students will identify and devise a plan to address personal and professional problems to create space for new growth and opportunities in their daily lives. Students will increase healthy self esteem through the development of learned optimism and strengthen their collaborative, leadership, written and verbal communication and problem solving skills.  My Value 101 must be completed before enrolling in any other IAE course.

 #3 The Unspoken Game Changer: Managing Perception

Number of Units: 3
Total Hours of Instruction: 45 hours  (Certificate 21 hours)

Course Description:

Students will learn how to manage perception to address issues, concerns and opportunities that present themselves for the purpose of advancing a relationship and/or new concepts, ideas, products or services. To accomplish this they will learn how to build trust and manage conflict in relationships, develop their listening, curiosity and questioning abilities, and use their newly found learned optimism. Students will learn the principles of value creation and deepen their understanding of how their perceptions impact a product or service and its development. Life 101 must be completed before enrolling in this course.

#4 Tune in Your Clearest Channels

Number of Units: 3
Total Hours of Instruction: 45 hours  (Certificate 21 hours)

Course Description: Students will develop core entrepreneurial skills in strategy, sales and marketing by building their public personae through exploring the role of archetypes in this course. To accomplish this, students will design and develop an external-personae that becomes a model for the marketing of goods, products and services and a guide to their strategy map. Students will develop their abilities to be trust-worthy as well as a servant leader while strengthening the diversity of their communication styles. Pitching, storytelling, interpersonal group skills, communication in teams, the use of different social media tools, and communicating through technical and/or design elements will be explored. Perceptions 101 must be completed before enrolling in any Tune-In 101.

#5 Build My Tribe

Number of Units: 3
Total Hours of Instruction: 45 hours  (Certificate 21 hours)

Course Description: Students will learn how to build their tribe by learning how to identify and develop customer segments and key partnerships. Students will deepen their understanding of tribe behavior and group dynamics, increase their ability to listen and fiercely communicate and learn how to evaluate and act on new opportunities in this course. The role of self-directed exploration will be will be explored through student engagement in informational interviews, the role of research, volunteering, shadowing, isolated skill building and failure will be highlighted to help students learn how to network and build trusted mentors, colleagues, peers and tribes. Tune-In 101 must be completed before enrolling in any Build My Tribe 101.

#6 My Gold

Number of Units: 3
Total Hours of Instruction: 45 hours  (Certificate 21 hours)

Course Description: Students will learn how to organically build Revenue model(s). They will be developed and refined in this class through group projects, evaluating individual skills and resources as well as through case studies. Patents, Product and Service Models, Building and leveraging Intellectual Property, Getting a job, B to B/B to C, Sales, Licensing, Retail, Manufacturing, and Distribution models, as well as crowd source fundraising will be explored. Students will learn how good ideas are developed, the role of piracy in innovation, and how reciprocity and the matching of ones actions and words produce revenue more quickly. Build My Tribe 101 must be completed before enrolling in My Gold 101.

#7 Sharing & Saving

Number of Units: 3
Total Hours of Instruction: 45 hours  (Certificate 21 hours)

Course Description: In this course, students will examine cost structures. They will identify and evaluate ways to simultaneously save and share by building reciprocal and interdisciplinary relationships through exploring the value system of the rainforest, the creative economy, and whole brain thinking through case studies and group projects. Through this course students will explore where they can be charitable while minimizing costs and maximizing benefit.  Students will learn how to identify and evaluate the actual and perceived costs of their key activities, customer relationships, channels, customer segments, revenue streams, key resources and key partnerships. Students will compare their value proposition statement to all of their various activities, resources and relationships to design new way of spending, living and doing. My Gold 101 must be completed before enrolling in any Sharing & Saving 101.

#8 Trust Yourself

Number of Units: 4
Total Hours of Instruction: 45 hours plus 30 hours of practicum   (Certificate 32 hours)

Course Description: In this course, students will learn how to synthesize the knowledge they have built through the previous 7 courses by designing and developing 30 hours of online education. Through this course students will learn how to build curriculum by exploring curriculum design models through examples and case studies.  They will experiment with how to reach their audience, develop lesson plans, test the material with beta users, and problem solve curriculum design and audience building issues. Based on their interests, skills, and desired audience, students will develop their curriculum and marketing materials and then pitch and promote their courses on line to the general public.  Students will compare their value proposition statement to the subject matter they select to teach and design their course to emphasize their passions and knowledge. Sharing & Saving 101must be completed before enrolling in Trust 101.
